Inu-Yasha is the protagonist of our story. He is the son of a demon and a human, making him a hanyou rather than a youkai. He is also the half brother of Sessho-Maru. Sessho-Maru is a youkai. Fifty years ago, Inu-Yasha was pinned to a tree and placed into a state of suspended animation by Kikyo, a priestess he loved deeply.
Decades later, Inu-Yasha was freed by Kagome, a reincarnated version of his former love Kikyo. Harboring a deep feeling of betrayal from what had happened he unwillingly aided Kagome in her search for the Shikon Jewel shards. Inu-Yasha wants the shards to become more powerful. Once they have collected the entire jewel Inu-Yasha plans one stealing the jewel and use it to become youkai.
No one knows how old Inu-Yasha really is but he acts, and has the mind set of a 16 or 17 year old. Inu-Yasha is quick tempered, rude, loud, obnoxious, and arrogant. But he is very emotional. His mood could change from completely content to outraged in a split second. He likes to keep to himself and doesn't trust any one with his fealings so it's hard for him and Kagome to form a relationship.
Because of Inu-Yasha's mixed parentage, one night each month, he becomes a normal human. When this happens Inu-Yasha loses all of his super human abilities. His hair turns black, his ears become human, and he loses his claws, fangs, speed and strength.

This is his claw attack that can pretty much rip anything to shreads. It's kewl 'cause y'know he's got like...claws and they're sharp...you do the math.

I like this, one it's just cool. Inu-Yasha can use his blood and throws it in sharp blades. So for all you bad guys thinking about killing him, don't cut him first. Or he will kill you all!!!
Tesusaiga
 
Left to him by his father hidden in his right eye, this sword was carved out of his father's fang by Toutousai. Sesshoumaru has tried to get it on several occasions, but seemingly can't touch it because he's a full demon, Inu-Yasha can only use it to protect humans, or when he's thinking of a human (Kagome in most cases) while fighting. It basically powers up into a big fang when Inu-Yasha fights, and he can use the "Kaze no Kizu" (cutting wind), which has the power to kill 100 youkai in a single stroke, to obliterate his opponants. It's all kewl! Tetsusaiga constrains Inu-Yasha's youkai blood, which means that it will not power up when Inu-Yasha goes all human. So when Shingetsu comes Inu-Yasha has pretty much no way to protect himself. And when Inu-Yasha get's into a fight without using Tetsusaiga, he turns into a full youkai in order to protect himself.
